Alaskan Gold Rush

Post by Roderick Treece »

I am working on a glass sign and antique mirror project for the Denali Nation park. I found some really cool art work for reference. Thought you might like to see some of it.

It looks like a fun job! You've got some nice things to work with there. Can't wait to see 'em done.
I like the larger letterstyle used on the first one, someone should turn that into a font. Hmmm... I just might do that.

Hey I did the gold leaf at Scagway Alaska about 15 years ago. I did the gold for "Gold Rush National Historical Park" and many of the antique style directional signs. It was so cool because i got a free trip to alaska and earned 2 thousand bucks on top of that ! Good luck with your job. I always wanted to do a chipped glass sign, and someday i may look into it on this forum.

That's an interesting spelling of "Good-By".

Here's a poem by Ralph Waldo Emerson spelled the same way:
Good-by
Good-by, proud world, I'm going home,
Thou'rt not my friend, and I'm not thine;
Long through thy weary crowds I roam;
A river-ark on the ocean brine,
Long I've been tossed like the driven foam,
But now, proud world, I'm going home.

Good-by to Flattery's fawning face,
To Grandeur, with his wise grimace,
To upstart Wealth's averted eye,
To supple Office low and high,
To crowded halls, to court, and street,
To frozen hearts, and hasting feet,
To those who go, and those who come,
Good-by, proud world, I'm going home.

I'm going to my own hearth-stone
Bosomed in yon green hills, alone,
A secret nook in a pleasant land,
Whose groves the frolic fairies planned;
Where arches green the livelong day
Echo the blackbird's roundelay,
And vulgar feet have never trod
A spot that is sacred to thought and God.

Oh, when I am safe in my sylvan home,
I tread on the pride of Greece and Rome;
And when I am stretched beneath the pines
Where the evening star so holy shines,
I laugh at the lore and the pride of man,
At the sophist schools, and the learned clan;
For what are they all in their high conceit,
When man in the bush with God may meet.

Those look really good Roderick, nice job!

So, that was Sally's bacon eh... I usually get blamed for that type of horseplay.

One more thing, what brand of crackle finish you using around there?

Thanks,
Jerry

They look great Roderick!
On the image that shows the close up of the reverse it appears that the crackle coat was put over the black shadow and some of the mirroring as well. Did it not affect that part at all?
Can you tell us more about the crackle - is it a waterbase, oil or epoxy? Is it a crackle made specifically for glass or leafing?
Thanks!

Hi Kelly,
We missed you last month! There was a tent spot in your honour .

When I do the crackle finish I spray part one ( Which I think is Wonda size) on to get a nice even coat. Then spray the crackle coat over that. Depending on how thick you put the crackle coat on is what dictats the size of the crack. Thinner/smaller, thicker/bigger. The crackle just gos over everything,glass ,paint ,what ever you put it on. It does not like glossy oil based paint.It does effect the front of the painted area at all.
Notice how it crackles right over the vinyl mask dot where the jewels going to go. If you look close at the outside areas you can see where the crackle get smaller.

It is water based material.

I beleave it was made for decorative painting originally. I first knew of it as a" Porciline crack"

I am going to call them today and see if they still offer this crackle and if so I am going to buy a few gallons.

Now I have a question, I love the look of the antique glass that you got and it may just be the lighting but can you share how you got that antique look to the panels? I know about the silvering I am talking about how you got that nice rich color.

Man those panels are amazing!!!

This link may be useful. It sounds as if it is the same type of product and it can be ordered in quart sizes. It comes in clear, but also in black, white and gold metallic. It uses Aqua Size as a base coat.

I'm sorry I couldn't make it too, Roderick, I would have dearly loved to have seen some of you again. Maybe next year. :)
Send me a group photo so I know who I missed. :)

Yes I am very familar with Faux Effects products as that is where I took some classes for faux finishing. Most of there stuff is awesome but very costly when it comes to something like this and there are tons of other ways to do it that work but I wanted to see what company makes this stuff.
Thanks for the response though!
