Venetian Turpentine = Gum Turps???

Post by David Slade »

I bought a small bottle of this and added it to my paint/mineral spirits mixture and it really helped with the length of stroke possible and helped the paint lay down flat. It is the color of honey and a little less viscous than honey. It smells like sweet pine sol. The maker is Talens, made in Holland.
I am in Japan so I can't get a lot of the usual supplies...

This must be the stuff you bought (translated from the dutch Talens site):

Image

Venetians terpuntine increases the shine, but als increases the drying time and yellows a little.

Purpose: Ingreasing the flowability
Ingredients: naturebalm, terpentineoil
Characteristics:
Traditional glazingmedium
Increases the dryingtime of the paintfilm
Expands the durability of the paintfilm
Brushstroke blurs, depending on the mixed quantity
Increases the briliance/shine
Yellows a little
Dilutable with terpentine
Flamable
Realizing we are in the 2nd renaissance of the arts.
Learn, copy and trying to improve...
Still in the learning phase ;-)

This is the gum turpentine that is the heavy body base in the family after the spiritous liquid is removed for solvent.

That's the one I bought all right! I'm glad I got the right thing.
Do you know if it harms durability? Any other demerits?
Thanks for the help Erik and Kent!

Gum turpentine should have no more effect on durability than pure spirits do when used in small amounts. Any additive with reduce fade resistance by a like ratio to the amount added.
