Looking for lettering guide info

Post by Guest »

Hi folks,

I am looking for either a font like this or a perhaps a guide that shows the correct way to do this. I am not sure what it is called so I'll show a rough mock up that I did.

Anyone know where I can find something like this that shows the whole alphabet to use as a reference? Looking for at least a Times New Roman, but ideally I'd love to find a book that shows a few different fonts done this way.

Hi Jockomo,
I have a lot of books here, but I don't recall owning (or even seeing) a book with all the letters defined by geometric elements like that one. I've seen the Times (esque) letterstyle done that way numerous times...you see it a lot in ads showing Davinci style drawings for anatomy and mechanical movements. I think I have even seen it in a font. It would be hard to define Dom Casual, for example, with lines, circles and ovals.

Good luck finding the book. Let us know if you do find one.

I found this in "Letters and Lettering" by Frank Chouteau Brown, 1902: Everett Press Co.

This is the only alphabet in the book illustrated with the construction lines.

Hope it helps,

Hello again, my book is called "Of the Just Shaping of Letters" by Albrecht Durer. It is put out by Dover Books (they make lots of books on type and letters). Look it up, it is pretty informative. Available on Amazon.

Thanks so much for your help folks.

Mike, thanks for posting that picture, the book seems to be out of print now, and Doug that looks exactly like what I need.

Now if I can just pick my jaw up off the floor after looking at some of the work you guys do, then I can get back to work. It's just amazing, and even more amazing that it's done by hand. You guys are true artists, especially when compared to computer hacks like myself.

I remember a few months ago someone put up a link to Abe Books, I just bought that book Mike mentioned as well as Bob Fitzgerald's "Practical Sign SHop Operation" first edition. He was the first sign painter I ever met, and I think he just passed away recently. He decorated the Jersey Shore with class and style. There are still some glass gilding jobs he did many years ago, still in service at the lumber yard, who also has some nice safe decoration done in gold, also by Bob. I wonder what happened to his shop?????
