English Style bar mirror

Post by Roderick Treece »

This is the piece I am working on right now. My client was inspired by a photo of an English bar mirror that was taken by Doug Bernhart. Doug was nice enough to give me permission to put it on my web site and so THANK YOU DOUG !!!
The mirror is 4' x 9' making it he largest one I've done yet.

Vance,
This client wanted a huge new mirror with alot of exposed clean mirror showing so I started with a new mirror and stripped out the areas i would be painting , acid/mica embossed and gilded. It's going to have an English family crest in the sheild.
I should be done gilding all the lettering in a few day's and will be able to turn it around again to show it off.

Thanks again Doug !!!

That should look nice Rod. What are you using to strip the mirror in the areas that are clear?

I think Rod would agree that it is important to choose a mirror made by a manufacturer that applies a nice, even, and not overly thick backing paint.
Mirror paints are generally machine rolled or "curtain coated" under a waterfall curtain of paint. Curtain coated is very smooth and even. Rolled can have pronounced textures of thick and thin paint.
Sand blasting off rolled paint mirror backings can actually leave the rolled texture visible in the etching.

Hey Rod-
What medium did you use to seal the sandblasting prior to the water gilding?

Do you think there's a significant difference in water gilding with leaf, as opposed to finishing it in mica or bronze powder?

I'm sure water gilded leaf would look a little brighter, but does that justify the extra time and expense of leafing?

I'm just keeping an eye on things....

.....great question Larry. I'm doing a project right now where I've deep carved the main lettering, backed that up with 1 Shot clear to take the "frost-etch" out, and ready to gild or powder the lettering as soon as I take care of a few small areas that didn't chip elsewhere on the panel.

Larry,
I seal my blasting with either Frog juice or shellack. If you do water gild I think it's best to get a really good shine to the surface first. I think it does make some deference with the water gilding.

I just finished 2nd coating the outlines and drop shadows and flipped it back down on the table to fill the areas where the MOP will go for the flowers.Once I get the flower area leveled out I can put it back on the easel , water gild the letters and put the mop on and it's done.
