Paint Shelf Organization
Posted by Carol on November 05, 2001We went into the shelves with all the cans of colors we have had mixed at the paint stores. The shelves are sorted first by whether they are water based or oil. Then we opened evey can and applied a finger smear of the color on the lid and a finger print on a page of paper. We now go to the shelf and there is a list showing samples of all the colors, and they are easy to find.
Updating this periodically offers the opportunity to discover the dried out and dead cans so they can be removed.

I cut up a 1 shot chart and put the colors on the shelf edge under the appropriate color. Makes finding enamel faster.
We had to have a lot of custom mixed colors made up to match specific buildings or projects. Most of the time they were colors available on those little color chip cards--the ones with six to eight colors shown on one card. We always picked up two or three extras of that card at the paint store. We circled the color used, added the name of the project, and then taped it to the front of the can. Then we checked the color on another card and stapled it to the work order in the customer's file.
