Yet another newbie

Post by Vladimir Sementukh »

Good day!
I apologize for my English, I can not speak on it.
If you do not mind, I'll use the "Google translator."
I'm from Russia, from the city of Perm, the Urals. There is almost no one works with gold leaf glass. I find it difficult to get competent advice and tips.
Products until I have little, as I have been doing glass less than two years, and as a hobby.
I like the classic European style, whether it is acceptable for glass?
Please evaluate my work.
Sorry for the poor quality of the photos.
Sincerely, Vladimir.

This is absolutely beautiful!!
Realy amazing, maybe the best verre eglomise I have seen in a long while!
How do you get the shades in your scrolls and other elements of your design?
What did you use to transfer your design on to the gold/glass?
Realizing we are in the 2nd renaissance of the arts.
Learn, copy and trying to improve...
Still in the learning phase ;-)

Welcome...

Very nice work. I hope you continue to share your work here. And would also like to know how you finished the blue and red backgrounds and more on how you do your details on the scroll work.

Hi Vladimir,
Your work is very nice and I have always been very drawn to those types of designs.
I would love to create traditional verre eglomise ornate mirrors like those in my studio but most clients won't pay for the intense time and labor required for a one-of-a-kind masterpiece executed in the ancient methods.

I am always one to think of different ways to create nice work, and try to keep it within an affordable price range. Constantly emerging new technology provides possibilities to produce stunning glass products at reasonable pricing.
I have attached a sample of a digitally printed durable transparent polymer ink on glass. After the art is printed, selected transparent colored areas could be silvered or gilded with various values of gold leaf.

Hello!
Thank you for the flattering for me feedback.
I do not know where to start answers ... I used not real gold, silver, and their simulation (brass, aluminum), or hobby too expensive for me. Although small technological experiments conducted with gold leaf.
Apply conventional methods of water gilding and oil gilding and combinations of them.
Images shadows I engrave tools on the photo. At the tip is made ramps 0.3 - 0.4 mm, changing the angle changes the width of the line.
Blue square mirror - drawing brush to apply a thin light gray and dark gray color and is then silvered.
Blue and red background obtained using transparent stained glass paints and subsequent imposition of a simple crumpled aluminum foil.
I will add a few photos which can be seen on the process of preparing designs and manufacturing of products, as well as a small first job.
Option Gorgon turned out unsuccessful, but the idea is interesting.

Sincerely, Vladimir.

P.S. Once again I apologize for my English ...

This is just incredible work! As Erik said and the others the best i have seen with this technique and only 2 years, incredible artist, i think i will be asking you for advice soon on stuff like this, one of those techniques i have wanted to know more about. You have spent hours on these panels! Did you silver the glass after backing up the gold and silver? Thanks for sharing your work, love to see more.

Thank you Dave!
Your rating means a lot to me because I have long admired your work. For me, your creativity - an incredible and unreachable!
If I understand the question, no - I use ready-made, factory mirror. I can not use chemicals and equipment. First I remove the protective layer, and then - water or oil gilding.

Vladimir

Thank you for saying , you certainly have a great eye for design and technique , love to what you will be doing in another 2 years time! . I like the subtle shades and the way the light is cast, did you design them as well? lovely scroll work . I noticed the leaf is not a mirror finish, what technique have you used for laying the leaf down? water gilded?

look forward to seeing more of this work. I have clients that i could put your way that would pay for this all day long. Dubai is a big player with this work right now also alot of London interiors looking for this work and paying big money, you need to put a website together and Facebook with Instagram, social media is the way to go for everyone.

Thanks for posting

Vladimir, you are touched by something devine...
How many hours did you scratched your tools on the circle design?
Still how did you transfer your design on the rear side of the silver and gold leaf?
You know what, come to Amsterdam and teach me!

Hi Vladimir,
When I first awoke this morning, I passed the breakfast table and headed straight to my computer to see what would be the latest response here.
To my delight, yours is an absolute display of hand craftsmanship. I am in awe of your dedication on these pieces.
As my friends on this site will attest, I am one to look at things very closely. I captured your initial photos and magnified them to get a closer look at the detail. The enlarged photos were a bit blurry but from what I could see the absence of the usual hard defining line between the elements and intense attention to detail caused me to think that these pieces were simply printed and then enhanced with the gilding that you mentioned.
Your latest photo depicting the tools you use, and the partially scratched and shaded leaf was not at all what I had expected to find. I am happy to see that you have embraced such a craft and that you have shared your work here.
I hope that you continue your quest for feedback and knowledge here, and that you will share more photos as well.

Vladimir,

Are you hand cutting your mask? As it looks like your using finished mirrored glass for some of you work. If you would... tell us how your working your design from the backside. How are you transferring the details of your designs?

Hello!
The execution of round mirrors - about a week (if I was not busy main job). But since this is a hobby, then a month.
That does not include the most beloved and creative piece of work - designing. But the sketches may be made independently of other work.
Manufacturing steps:
- Preliminary compositional sketches
- Final sketches
- On the basis of ready-prepared vector images scanned sketch (CorelDRAW)
- Preparation of glass or mirror
- Cutting and pasting the mask (you can manually, but "Roland" makes it faster)
- Gold plated (silver)
- Remove the mask
- Scratching and painting over the image details
- Gluing background
- Scratching and painting of shadows
- The application of the protective layer
For the main parts of the image using oil gilding, as it is frosted and drawing on it more contrast and more visible. Oil gilding lighter engraved (scratched) because it has a much thicker material than water gilding.

I have no formal art education.
But I draw a very long time.
For example here are these pictures for more than twenty years.
I apologize for the subject matter :? - I was then in love with his wife and Aubrey Beardsley :) .
I do not have their own artistic style and I get influenced by many artists and styles, but I try not to copy them completely.
In the first two pictures you can find "The Great Wave" Hokusai and "Danae" Gustav Klimt

Here I abandoned heraldic curls and made a drawing in the style of Jean le Pautre.
I closed my eyes Gorgon, otherwise it was too realistic.
But with his lips still overdone ... :)

Unfinished defective work of the previous year.
The acrylic adhesive is dry with spots and streaks.
After that I began to use only oil glue (slightly diluted with turpentine.
I have nothing more to show you.
But I finished the next product design.
If you are interested, I will gradually publish photos of the stages of production.
I hope many will be clearer than at computer translation.

Beautiful work, well thought out and executed. I've dreamed of doing a large glass tabletop with an old world map in this style and method. Having run a few practice pieces I have great admiration for the amount of time and skill you have put into these pieces. Well done!
I believe there is no shame in failure. Rather, the shame lies in the loss of all the things that might have been, but for the fear of failure.
