Re: Backing of a reverse glass sign question
Olivier, Though you've directed your questions to 3 of us, I'll give my opinion on all 3 questions: 1.) It's really not necessary to use hardener. It's a nice product that One-Shot offered in recent years which speeds the drying and makes the paint harder, but it also (I think) makes it more brittle...

Re: Backing of a reverse glass sign question
Hi Olivier. Nice sign you've posted here. Sometimes having brush strokes show through from behind is a nice effect. In an era when so much is computer-generated, it can be desirable to have evidence of a personal touch. However, that's not always what the customer wants. One thing you could try is b...

Re: Code of Ethics
Roderick, It's good to be reminded of the ethics of doing business. Sometimes a person unintentionally step on toes without knowing the ethics. At other times it's easy, especially when the bills pile up and a job looks enticing, to close one's ears to those ethics which can be summed up as - "...

Nice work, David! I've no idea how old you are but since you mentioned it - you're never too old to "get into the game" . We all start these things at different stages in our lives & careers and each of us brings to the task a different set of gifts, skills & experience. Sounds to ...

Re: Gilding Precast Letters
Thank you, Larry. I will give that Segale fellow a call! Jes, thanks for your advice as well. I've done a fair amount of gilding myself but the particular surface I am looking at is precast concrete. A mold is made of the letters and formed into the concrete. It's just a surface I haven't worked wit...

Gilding Precast Letters
I have an opportunity to bid on gilding some 24" tall engraved lettering on a fascia fascia. I've never really actually worked with gilding precast material. Anyone have advice on a good sealer/primer to use or general technique on doing this? Seems like it would be fairly simple but if anyone ...

Re: Looking for good software advice.
I'm not sure, but can you do bitmap manipulation in Flexi Sign and/or Gerber Omega.? Yes, Robare, you can do pretty extensive photo manipulation in FlexiSIGN. But it doesn't seem to be as versatile as the capability in Photoshop which is why I sometimes take it into Photoshop for further enhancemen...

That's a nice comparative overview of the 2 major design programs, Robare. I mostly use FlexiSIGN Pro. I've found it to be an excellent program for my sign & design needs but it's pretty expensive. There are also limits to what it can do and I'll sometimes convert my design to an eps and bring i...

Re: Covering a whole window with 1Shot
Important points brought up by Lee & Kent. Years ago I did some window gilding & there were a couple of windows that the owner wanted the lower portion of the glass to be obscured with a deep blue panel. I painted the windows, backed them up with aluminum bronzing powder for opacity & le...

Bob, Similar to Danny's suggestion (I've never tried Bulldog) XIM makes a primer I've used on a number of surfaces. The product description is: XIM’s 400 CLEAR Quick Dry, Clear Bonding Primer/Sealer. Interior or Exterior. Accepts Alkyd Topcoats. For Tough-To-Paint surfaces. *Glass, Tile, *Formica, *...

Re: Wall Dog / Sign Painter needed in the Denver area
Well, I finished up this job earlier this week. Thought I ought to post a couple of pictures. At first we had talked about doing the style as if it were painted somewhere in the 40's - 50's to go along with some really fun wallpaper they're doing so I did a narrow, vertical version to fit on a narro...

Re: New in Signs and questioning !
I agree with Mike - you can intermix any of the 1Shot paints. I've used both the shading black & the tinting white at times but not often. I think the purpose of those products is to darken or lighten a color without altering the actual color. Or they can be added to clear to do things like crea...

I know what you mean, Doug. I get this intangible sense of someone taking control of my tools. Kind of like not having to buy lettering quills but instead pay a small monthly fee to have the "keeper of the quills" unlock them for my use. No problem until I don't pay - then my brushes are l...

Don't know your background but you obviously have a good sensibility about sign layout & lettering. Hope you'll continue to delve deeper into the craft.
Right offhand, I'm not sure who to recommend for the DC area, but I'm confident someone else can direct you.

Erik,
If I'm not mistaken, Frog Juice & 1-Shot UV Clear Acrylic are basically the same thing - technically speaking. Not sure about polyurethane clear. Kent Smith could probably help out here if he happens to check into the forum.
