Re: Creative Cloud

Mike....were you running CS previously? The reason I ask as I contacted Adobe to get a box set of CS6 Creative suite yesterday and it is a much bigger deal than I thought. They told me they don't send out the packaged CD's anymore and spent more than a little time trying to talk me into cloud. The u...

Re: Creative Cloud

Can easily see the attraction for you as you use something like Photo Shop on-goingly but unless I've been traveling it might sit "all but un-used" for months at a time. Then I'll settle down to work with it for a month or more of evenings. It would also be daunting for me to be at the &qu...

Re: illustrator question

Thanx Mike....I've come to realize there's no easy way. Shame. I remember discussing this with Studden a few years ago as he was also hoping for similar results with Illustrator. As far as I know he's still using Omega. When I make progress I'll let you know what happens. Have tried to place circles...

Ya Bill....good to know you're still about. Mike's right with the facebook message as there's lots of chatting but not much content. Great place to see some historic pictures etc. I check in here almost everyday although the time needed to post a thoughtful reply etc is just limited.

illustrator question

Sorry if I'm off the topic of hand lettering somewhat here but I know of no better place to post and get a good answer to this. I did subscribe to Linda.com but have closed off for the summer and now find myself in need of advice. If I have drawn a letter with the sharp points the illustrator leaves...

Re: question: shaping new brushes

Great question and Bob also has my method....once you use it for the first time, which may require getting the size (if there's a stiffness in brush not to be confused with gold size) out of it with a wash in warm water and letting dry. It will naturally find an edge in first use and keep it in oil ...

Beautiful work Pat...I guess I'm curious as to "why" screen print with one shot. Am guessing for almost every purpose the probably better solution is to use screen inks.

Re: Irish Mirrors from Peter Mcullens travels

We had a Houlihans here in Ottawa. A number of years ago I was doing some glass work for an old client who'd been with the Houlihans and he said something to the effect that the guys who did the glass work were from California and they did a bunch of it on site. He did say there were 2 and that one ...

Hi Cairan. There's just SOOO much good advice on the process here I would just take the time to read over all the posts and follow the processes used. It is worth noting that Dave Smith is just across the channel and gives workshops.

Re: Adobe going to Creative Cloud

You know I just don't think I could stand the idea of getting dinged every month even in small amounts. I have no concerns about paying for something outright but leasing this or that software long term just isn't for me. I have to be honest...if that becomes the only option I'll have to make a swit...

Re: Yet another newbie.

Always good to see someone with as much interest as you seem to be showing. Just do your best with the on-line tutorials and keep an eye open for lessons or classes that you may happen upon. Bad habits are easier to deal with now of course. The Pelican watercolours are great if you have the brush to...

Re: Tips for visiting London?

Eric...aside from some great pubs to look at you MUST go to the Market Porter. It's in Borough Market right over the bridge from St. Pauls Cathedral. It is the premier London ale pub. On a summers day it will be packed in and outdoors and try one of the ales with the handwritten paper tags on the pu...

Re: Surface gild failure.......any ideas??

Hi Joe...I'd start doing a test and cut back or out the hardener. Am guessing that if the paint is surface dry and you can still smell that wiff from the hardener it is off gassing in some way. Have never used the size you mention so I would also be tempted to see if there was some change between th...

Re: Practice Materials

Mike was probably referring to a waterbased "guauche" like paint they make/made at one time....used gallons of it. I believe you can still buy guauche in small jars at any art store, and will need to use the sable brushes (incredibly difficult to find). The advice is sound...stick to the 1-...

Well done Terry. I'm a real sucker for those BBC period programs. They show up on PPS and TVO here occasionally. One day you'll need to tell me how you're daughter set up that page to help with work flow. The new of world marketing has me stumped.

French masters have also been really good but when I get to the smaller sizes, like number 4 which is really good with how I work the hair is too short and just doesn't suit me. Good luck with which ever you choose.

Re: Basic set of lettering brushes.

I like Lee look to the brown haired brushes although I do have a set of sables Studden refers to. The brown quills are soft and easy to use and more available than the grey which are/were more responsive and "springy" Have had problems finding the Raphael's I was used to and am about to or...
